About the Youth Parliament
The Youth Parliament is an opportunity for grade 9 & 10 students in the Northwest Territories to assume
the role of a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) at the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife. This
includes researching community concerns, meeting with their MLA to discuss issues, writing a Member's or
Minister's statement, thinking about and writing questions for Question Period, learning the process of
making a bill into a law, and having lots of fun.
Letters are sent to all Principals of High schools in the Northwest Territories. They are
asked to help select grade 9-10 students in their school by providing them with the application information
or by referring them to the Youth Parliament web page on the website of the Legislative Assembly of the
Northwest Territories. All applications are considered and one student from each riding is selected to
represent his or her Member of the Legislative Assembly. Any student in the NWT in grade 9 or 10 can apply.
Nearly all expenses are paid for by the government. These include, air fare, accommodation, meals, and any
scheduled extra curricular activities.
The 2003 Youth Parliament was held from May 5th - 9th, 2003.
The Canadian Children's Rights Council wishes to commend the Legislative Assembly of the
Northwest Territories for their efforts to support the rights and responsibilities of Canadian children and
youths by including them in the democratic process.
