peine sortie de prison, lundi, après avoir purgé une peine de 12 ans pour sa participation aux meurtres de deux adolescentes ontariennes, Karla Homolka a jugé qu'elle devait s'expliquer publiquement plutôt que de chercher se cacher.

La femme de 35 ans, nerveuse et l'air contrit, s'est rendue la Maison de Radio-Canada Montréal moins de deux heures après avoir quitté le pénitencier de Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines pour y offrir une entrevue exclusive, a affirmé sur les ondes de RDI la journaliste Joyce Napier, de l'mission Le Point.

L'entrevue d'une dure de 20 minutes dans laquelle elle dit entre autres tre remplie de remords pour les gestes qu'elle a commis a t diffuse lundi soir.

La criminelle la plus médiatisé du pays en ce moment s'est présente aux installations de la société d'tat dans une mini fourgonnette, de la même faon qu'elle a quitté la prison situe au nord de Montréal.

Les nombreux journalistes installés depuis des jours la sortie du pénitencier o Homolka avait t transfère il y a quelques semaines — elle tait auparavant dans un établissement pénitencier Joliette — pour assister sa libration n'y ont vu que du feu. Ils n'ont pu apercevoir la femme dans une des deux mini fourgonnettes rouges qui ont passé les limites de la prison lundi. La nouvelle de sa libration a t annonce peu après par l'avocat des victimes, Me Tim Danson, et par une porte-parole du Service correctionnel du Canada, Michèle Pilon-Santilli.

Elle est partie, a dit Mme Pilon-Santilli aux journalistes.

Karla Homolka a tenu accorder une entrevue un média francophone alors qu'elle compte s'installer au Québec. La femme parle le français couramment, l'ayant appris au cours de sa détention Joliette.

Lundi, elle a vu arriver son terme une peine de 12 ans de prison qu'elle purgeait pour sa participation dans les meurtres de deux adolescentes ontariennes, Kristen French et Leslie Mahaffy, commis avec son mari de l'poque, le tueur et violeur en série Paul Bernardo.

Mme si on sait qu'elle a circulé dans un véhicule rouge et qu'elle a travers l'le de Montréal du nord au sud pour se rendre Radio-Canada, on ignore o se trouve actuellement Karla Homolka.

Elle doit toutefois laisser savoir la police, dans de très brefs délais, en vertu de conditions imposes par la cour, o elle s'est installe et avec qui elle compte vivre.

Homolka, qui a tenté sans succès ces derniers jours d'obtenir une injonction de la cour pour tenir les médias distance, craint pour sa vie en liberté. Elle dit craindre que des gens en colère veuillent rendre un service au public en (me) tuant, a-t-on pu lire dans un document présent devant la cour.

Elle avait t transfère de l'institution carcérale de Joliette après avoir fait l'objet de menaces de mort.

Le fait qu'en 1993 elle ait accepté de témoigner contre Bernardo et de plaider coupable deux chefs d'homicide involontaire coupable en change d'une peine réduite de 12 ans a ajout la fureur du public canadien son endroit.

Bernardo a finalement t reconnu coupable de deux accusations de meurtre au premier degré et condamné la prison vie sans possibilité de libration conditionnelle.

En imposant une peine de 12 ans d'emprisonnement Homolka, le tribunal avait aussi pris en considération son rôle dans la mort, en 1990, de sa sœur Tammy. L'adolescente de 15 ans est morte après avoir t drogue par Homolka pour que Bernardo puisse la violer.

Maintenant en liberté, Homolka doit respecter une série de restrictions que lui a imposes le juge Jean R. Beaulieu, de la Cour du Québec, chambre criminelle, au début juin.

Entre autres, elle devra s'impliquer activement dans une thérapie, se rapporter la police et ne pas entrer en contact avec les familles de Paul Bernardo ou de ses victimes.

Si elle effectue un déplacement de plus de 48 heures, elle devra indiquer le moyen de transport, le trajet, la dure du séjour, les coordonnes du départ, de l'arrive et le nom des personnes qui l'accompagnent.

Elle devra également s'abstenir d'avoir en sa possession de la drogue ou des stupéfiants, moins qu'ils ne lui aient t prescrits.

Ce mardi, ses avocats devraient déposer une requête au nom de leur cliente au palais de justice de Joliette pour faire annuler ces conditions.
