Judgment reinforces court bias against dads
The Vancouver Province, Vancouver, British Columbia, Thursday, August 3, 2006
The Supreme Court of Canada has again unfairly declared open season on fathers by awarding a mother rather than her children more rights to dad's cash.
The court's ruling says parents are obliged to support their children in a way commensurate with their income.
If parents receive pay increases at work following a divorce but don't give more in child support, they can be walloped with retroactive charges.
Statistically, women are given custody of the children in 93 per cent of Canadian court cases.
But to be fair, any parent, regardless of sex or income, should have equal opportunity to have their children live with them for 50 per cent of the time.
Courts should encourage this by splitting the financial responsibility of the children equally between both parents.
This law unfairly gives women (not children) control over a man's finances, and inhibits his drive and ambition to advance himself following his divorce.
It allows mothers to snoop and loot men's wallets as they or the court see fit, even decades after a divorce.
Thousands of divorced Canadian dads believe family court is the last place to find justice or fairness regarding their children.
Good parenting isn't about one parent's money.
It's about treating everyone equally and with dignity.
